When you're in pain, any solution will do, no matter what, but from our experience, inserting anything into swollen hemorrhoids, particularly a 'frozen device', is an extreme measure and is by no means a "cure' as its solicitors claim!

'Cryogenic' means 'very low temperature'. The 'device' is nothing more than a round cylinder of plastic. The purveyors of this product (usually something with "ice" in its name) recommend placing it in your freezer, then inserting it inside (or on) the already-sore area. They also recommend purchasing two such 'devices' because one insertion is often not effective!

Needless to say, this 'treatment' is often painful and it is not hygienic and frankly you could accomplish the same thing with an ice cube. The recommendation that the used product be placed back into the refrigerator and reused is especially repulsive.

Furthermore, 'cold treatment' directly conflicts with doctors' common recommendation of a hot bath for hemorrhoidal relief. We and other users have found any relief from this method to be minimal and very temporary.

Here's what one third party emailed to us in June of 2002: "You have my permission to publish the story but nothing that may identify me... I have had an awful bout with internal and external hemroids for a little over six months now. I have been given every prescription out there but they just keep flaring up. I purchased the frozen cryogenic device and yah it didn't work, it actually made things worse. It feels good to apply it but my condition actually worsened with the hemroids getting larger after just two applications, once in the morning and then before bed."

Yet another dissatisfied customer complaint emailed to us in September of 2002: "I am suffering so bad with "ITCHING HEMORRHOIDS." As I type this I cannot hardly take much more of this severe itching and have tried the over-the-counter products and NOTHING is working at all. Out of desperation, I ordered the "ANUICE" Cold Application/Double Pack for 60 bucks and have been doing exactly what you described in your message....Freezing, inserting for 10 minutes, lubrication for the insert, washing, and re-freezing, and I AM FURIOUS....IT DOES NOT WORK, AND IS A LIE!"

These "specially formulated topical treatments" are just that - topical, which means that they must be applied to the afflicted area. That is a bit messy, not only at the time of application but afterward, as the 'oil' can embarrassing stain clothing. However, those considerations would be less important IF the product claims were true.

Our experience was that these products provided no more immediacy or longevity of relief that an over-the-counter $2-tube of 2% (not 1% or 0.5%) anti-itch or anti-inflammatory cream found at drug and grocery stores.

Sellers of these oils recommend applying their oils to the soles of the feet which is particularly ridiculous. The most direct route to the blood stream is injection; next - through the lungs (inhalation); then ingestion (through the stomach). Absorbing anything through the skin is the slowest and most inefficient means of introducing compounds into the blood stream. Of course recommending the application of the oil to more surface area of the body might cause some users to deplete their supply and reorder sooner.

Interestingly, these products were selling for around $9 per bottle in the Fall of 2001. Now they are priced at over $30 (including shipping).

Over hundreds of years our ancestors sought relief from nature for their aches and pains, digging up roots, boiling leaves and bark, and sometimes successfully finding healing effects of "herbs", the efficacy of which has been proven with time and usage.

The key to herbal effectiveness isn't just the herb, but its quality and concentration of active ingredients, and the efficiency of the processing methods for extracting the effective ingredients. The products we recommend are manufactured in the U.S.A. under quality-control standards that don't exist in most parts of the world.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does not regulate herbal products because they pose no threat to our health, so if you find herbal products priced a little too good to be true, they were probably manufactured outside the U.S.
