Most important is to find the cause of hemorrhoids, because just treating hemroids symptoms is pointless if they are just going to come back again. The maximal resting anal pressure decreased and anodermal blood flow increased in the treatment group but not in the placebo group. Hemroids recurred in 8 percent of the successfully treated patients, but all the fissures healed with a second course of treatment. Schouten et al. reported similar results in an uncontrolled series of 34 patients with chronic hemroids treated with topical 1 percent isosorbide dinitrate.

One clinical problem with topical nitrate therapy is a substantial incidence of headache, particularly at higher drug concentrations. Fortunately, these headaches are often minor and transient. A second potential difficulty is the development of drug tolerance, a problem well documented with nitrate therapy for cardiovascular disease and now also reported during treatment for hemorrhoids.

Cleanse the entire rectal area with warm water after each bowel movement, and use a bulk fiber laxative to soften stools. This helps eliminate straining with bowel movements.

Sitting on donut-shaped cushions to relieve pressure. Again, this offers only temporary relief.

Bulk fiber supplements such as psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel), can be taken daily to prevent recurrences of hemorrhoids.

The herb Horse chestnut has been used for centuries to provide relief of hemorroids. The alcoholate of the nut has anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties providing relief from varicosis and hemorrhoids. Horse chestnut is still the desired treatment among Europeans when treating hemorrhoids.

By following all these suggestions, the pain, discomfort, and swelling of most symptomatic hemroids should decrease in two to seven days, and the firm lump should recede within four to six weeks. If there is no noticeable changes using these techniques, then invasive procedures by a medical professional may be necessary.
