The best way to prevent the problem is to pass your bowel movements as soon as possible after the urge occurs.

If you have to sit for long periods of time, at work, always go for a walk or stand when you get a break. Try to be off your seat at least 5 minutes each hour, and shift your buttocks in your chair from side to side often. This will help you avoid constant rectal pressure.

When lifting or straining, exhale, and do not hold your breath.

If showing signs of diarrhea, constipation or coughing get treatment immediately, since hemroids may be on the horizon.

Bowel movements should take no longer than three to five minutes, therefore, no long term reading on the toilet. Maintaining good bowel movements and a soft stool are essential for preventing hemorrhoids!

No straining during bowel movements, straining forces hemroids to swell.

A good hemroids cure is to drink lots of water and follow a high-fiber diet. If necessary, take a stool softener. Softer stools make for smoother less straining bowel movements resulting in less pressure put on the rectal veins.

Diarrhea can be as tough on the anus as constipation. Don't overuse laxatives!

Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist what non prescription products are available for relief of the pain and itching. Please see the medication section of this web site. Please be careful of any side effects of the medication your doctor has prescribed for you.

Regular exercise helps to avoid becoming constipated.

If you have hemorrhoids, avoid a lot of wiping after a bowel movement. Using a soft, moist toilet paper (or a commercial moist pad or baby wipe) may help relieve discomfort. For severe cases, shower instead of wiping, then dry gently.

Avoid lifting heavy objects if you have hemorrhoids.

Excessive alcohol directs the blood flow into the peripheral vessels which conduces bleeding from hemorrhoids.

Avoid Irritating food such as pepper and mustard mix. These can cause pain during bowel movements and induce swelling.

If these preventive measures fail, please seek professional help as soon as possible. Hemroids can be mild in the morning and become extremely uncomfortable in the evening.

Most importantly, is to find the cause of your hemorrhoids, because just treating the hemroids themselves is pointless if they are just going to come back again. There are several suggested home remedies for relief of the pain and itching of hemorrhoids. The goal is to get relief from the itching and burning and also shrink the hemorrhoids.

Although many people have hemorrhoids, not all experience symptoms. If you experience, any of the following symptoms, you could have hemorrhoids:

  • Bleeding during bowel movements
  • Rectal bleeding after movement of bowels
  • Bright red blood found in stool
  • Mild burning during bowel movement
  • Protrusion in the course of bowel movements
  • Itching in the anal area
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Sensitive or painful lump(s) on the anus

The Four Different Degrees of Hemroids:

1st - Bleeding is the main symptom, and there is no anal prolapse.

2nd - Prolapses during bowel movement, but retracts back inside the anus when finishing movement.

3rd - After hemroid protrudes, it does not return inside without pushing it with your fingers, etc.

4th - Hemroid is always protruding outside the anus, even without any bowel movement.

A thorough examination, evaluation and proper diagnosis by a doctor is essential any time bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stool lasts more than a couple of days. Bleeding can also be a symptom of other digestive diseases, such as colorectal cancer.

Although most cases of hemroids can be treated with over the counter medications, in the home treatments, and changing ones diet and nutritional habits, some times more drastic measures need to be taken. There are several surgical techniques used to alleviate hemorrhoids. Most of these procedures can be performed as an outpatient.
