The unique combination of Horse Chestnut Seed (standardized extract - 20% Aescin), micronized purified Flavonoid Complex (from lemons and grape seeds containing OPCs, Diosmin and Hesperidin), and Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica), creates anti-inflammatory properties that are highly effective in the treatment of hemorrhoids, varicose and spider veins, and other forms of inflammation.

Nature's Perfect Remedy Ingredients

Horse Chestnut Seed (250 mg) standardized extract (20% Aescin)

The main therapeutic ingredient of the seeds of the horse chestnut is Aescin. It reduces inflammation, tones venous walls and allows blood to flow back to the heart more readily (by closing minute holes and microscopic leaks in the tiniest blood vessels, the venules, and the capillaries). In reinforcing the strength of veins, Aescin promotes venous elasticity and prevent swelling and long-term damage to veins.

Specifically, Horse Chestnut Seed extract may help to treat the discomforts of varicose veins and other venous problems. Symptoms of varicose veins and the closely related condition known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI - swollen legs, pain, and heaviness in the legs, and calf cramps, especially at night) - may well subside with horse chestnut treatment. In parts of Europe, the herbal extract has been intensively studied for this use in particular, with numerous clinical trials cited in medical literature.

For example, a 1996 study involving 240 patients, reported that Horse Chestnut Seed extract (Aescin, 50 mg twice a day) provided the same relief from lower leg swelling (edema) as support stockings (compression). (Such stockings are typically considered the primary treatment for varicose veins and venous insufficiency, so the fact that the Horse Chestnut Seed extract could perform with similar effectiveness was significant.)

Investigators who reviewed the findings of 13 clinical trials done on the extract concluded it was clearly better than a placebo in relieving vein-related leg problems such as varicose veins. The analysis was published in a 1998 issue of the well-known Scientific Journal Archives of Dermatology.

Painful and inflamed hemorrhoids may subside with Horse Chestnut Seed extract for the same reasons. By strengthening and toning the body's veins, as well as actually lessening swelling and fluid retention in the body, the hemorrhoid (a swollen vein itself) will be more likely to recede. German health authority, Commission E, (equivalent to US FDA) approves Horse Chestnut Seed extract for the treatment of hemorrhoids and numerous leg conditions including nocturnal cramping of the calves, pruritis, and swelling or chronic venous insufficiency.

Micronized Purified Flavonoid Complex (500 mg)

Bioflavonoids, particularly diosmin, oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs), and hesperidin, have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of hemorrhoids and varicose veins. These bioflavonoids exhibit phlebotonic activity, vasculoprotective effects, and antagonism of the biochemical mediators of inflammation. OPCs, diosmin, and hesperidin have been the subject of numerous clinical trials on efficacy and safety in the treatment of varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

In a 90-day, double-blind study, 100 patients with acutely bleeding internal hemorrhoids were randomly divided into two groups and treated with a micronized bioflavonoid product or a placebo. The primary endpoint was cessation of bleeding on the third day of treatment. Acute bleeding stopped by the third day in 40 patients (80%) who received the bioflavonoids compared with 19 (38%) who took the placebo. The treatment group had a cessation of bleeding 2.1 days faster than the patients receiving placebo. Also, continued treatment in patients with no bleeding prevented a relapse in 30 of 47 patients, compared with 12 of 30 receiving placebo.

Centella Asiatica Standardized Extract (60 mg - 10% Asiaticosides).

Centella helps to heal and strengthen blood vessels. Rigorous clinical investigation of Centella asiatica has been conducted on chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins. Centella has the potential to enhance connective tissue integrity, elevate antioxidant levels in wound healing, and improve capillary permeability. A randomized, multicenter, placebo-controlled, double blind study investigated Centella extract in the treatment of venous insufficiency.

Ninety-four patients received either Centella extract in two different doses (120 mg/day, 60 mg/day) or a placebo over a two-month period. Results were evaluated subjectively by the patients' symptoms and objectively by plethysmography.

The Centella groups resulted in significant improvements in symptoms of heaviness in the lower limbs, edema, and overall evaluation by the patient. Venous distensability, measured by a mercury strain gauge plethysmograph at three occlusion pressures, was improved for the Centella groups but aggravated for the placebo group. The differences in the effect of the different Centella doses were not significant, but did reveal a dose-effect relationship.

For those in Canada, Nature's Perfect Remedy is not available. One of the ingredients in NPR is Centella Asiatica, which is only available by prescription in Canada and cannot be imported.

Nature's Perfect Remedy Recommended Dosage: 2 caplets, two or three times daily, one hour after meals. Do not exceed recommended dosage or take more than six caplets a day.
