Causes of Rectal Bleeding - Anal Hemorrhoids

Rectal Bleeding is a bloody pain in the ass (apologies to all of our allies in the UK). If you have bleeding hemorrhoids, you have internal hemorrhoids. External hemorrhoids may not bleed. If you have anal bleeding, it is likely caused by an anal fissure. Because a hemorrhoid is swollen or strangulated veins, if it is scraped by hard GI stools or stretched during bowel movements, it will bleed. The blood from bleeding hemorrhoids can appear on toilet paper after wiping, or as red or reddish streaks in the stools. It is very important to note that any bleeding from the rectum can indicate a more serious condition, and should be examined by a physician as soon as possible.

Rectal bleeding is a sign that something is wrong. A bleeding bowel is usually something minor that can often be easily diagnosed. It is important that the specific cause of rectal bleeding be identified so appropriate treatment can be started and the problem corrected. Even though a bleeding anus may not be serious, an individual should never assume this to be the case. Most importantly, rectal bleeding may be a sign of rectal cancer.

Hemmorhoids - Depending on the source of bleeding (which may be from any part of the gastrointestinal tract), treatment can range from relief of symptoms to antibiotics, blood transfusion, or surgery. Therefore, it is important to locate the source of rectal bleeding so that appropriate treatment can be started and the problem remedied.
